Work is in progress

Hope Hickman was born in the suburbs of Akron, Ohio in 1994. The daughter of a school teacher and general contractor, she spent her youth dedicated to her schooling and training as a competitive swimmer. Unfortunately, this was under coaches with unsavory predilections for young athletes. Though many were subsequently arrested, her experience as a young queer girl under these conditions left an indelible impression. Most recently, her sculptures and paintings investigate the mundane and the ironic, with particular attention to contemporary life within the American suburbs. Hope uses play and humor to tackle ideas like puritanical frugality and suburban ennui. This upcoming body of work serves as a lens to view the cultural nuances of suburbia, middle class America, and the Midwest.
